Introduction

Electrical Department plays a vital role in the Railway System. This is responsible for lighting in station area, residential area, PRSs, offices, hospitals, rest houses etc. This is also responsible for lighting in trains, maintenance of AC coaches, water coolers, air-conditioning in offices, hospitals, retiring rooms etc. In addition, the power supply to all electrified stations, water pumping for stations, trains and residential colonies are also looked after by the Electrical Department.

The Electrical Department has been divided into two wings –

Electrical General Services, and

Train Lighting & Air-Conditioning (TL&AC).

The Electrical Department is headed by Chief Electrical Engineer. The Chief Electrical Engineer is ex-officio Electrical Inspector to Central Government for North Western Railway. He is assisted by Dy. Chief Electrical Engineer/HQ and other Sr.scale and Jr.scale officers at HQ as well as in the Divisions and Workshops.

          The jurisdiction of the Electrical Department is as under –

          Divisions -  Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur.

          Workshops - Jodhpur, Ajmer, Bikaner and EPR/Ajmer
 
Network

North Western Railway purchases electric power from 4 Electricity Boards (RSEB, GSEB, HSEB and PSEB) to meet requirement at 514 stations for Electric General Services.

North Western Railway has installed 92 DG sets of total capacity of 13099 KVA at important railway stations to work as standby arrangement to meet power requirement of essential load.

No. of Consumers
Power for Electrical General purpose is mainly distributed to Railway Installations, stations, workshops, staff quarters and colonies. In addition to this, some outside parties like – refreshment rooms, tea stall vendors, GRP staff etc. are also connected with Railway working. Electricity is supplied to these consumers through the Railway Distribution System.
